The plain truth is, if you manage your tasks and your time wisely, you’ll get more done. Like most people in business, you have a lot to think about and a lot to get done every day. So, to build your business, you’ll simply have to be better organized and more productive. Here are 19 ways to manage your time so you can keep up with everything as you grow.

Every Day Time Management

Plan the day. Each morning, take time to go over your plan for the day. You can do this while you’re showering, driving to work, or waiting for your coffee to brew. Include what your must do, should do, and want to do.

Tailor your day to you. You know your times of peak productivity—when you’re at your best. Schedule the day around those times, and be sure to give yourself breaks and little rewards for getting things done.

Eat the frog. Mark Twain advised: “If you have to eat a live frog, it’s best to do it first thing in the morning. And if you have to eat two frogs, eat the biggest one first.” Tackle the most difficult task first, and everything else will be way easier to handle.

Time block. Avoid allowing everything to happen at once. Schedule time blocks for getting leads, creating content, analyzing your progress, and other business activities—as well as for personal activities you do daily.

Seize the moment. When you get new information, take an extra minute or two to enter it in your phone’s contacts and notes. This makes it easy to follow up in timely fashion.

Learn to say no. You want to say yes to meetups, leads, and other opportunities that come your way. But be willing to say no to things that suck up a ton of time, drain your energy, and don’t add value to your life, either professionally or personally.

Delete distractions. It might seem like a good idea to sit in front of the TV while you do paperwork, but staying focused at your desk will see you get more done in less time.

Get the most out of your tech. Your phone, tablet, computer and the apps and platforms available on those devices can deliver a wealth of resources to boost your productivity. Learn those tools to save yourself time and lighten your workload. Be sure to master the mobile versions of the platforms you use in the office—especially those for CRM and transaction management. These let you make good use of any downtime when you’re out of the office.

Set alerts. Before you start the day, set alarms on your phone for five minuets before each of the major items on your calendar. This keeps you on schedule and gives you some transition time between tasks.

Time Management for the Long Term

Prioritize your health. Don’t let work interfere with your daily workout or cause you to overindulge in alcohol or junk food. Take care of your body and it will take care of you. Healthy habits make you feel better—and that helps you be more productive.

Take time to meditate or pray. Whether you call it prayer, meditation, or another mindful practice, take a few minutes for daily quiet time. This can have physical, mental, and emotional benefits that help you work more effectively. Pick a time that’s best for you each day—first thing, midday, late in the evening, whenever.

Establish personal goals. These financial, relationship, and family goals keep you from wasting time and help you stay on course when things get challenging.

Visualize the best day. Think of a perfect day in your business. What people, places, actions, and events would it include. This exercise helps you clarify the things you need to do to grow your business.

Collaborate. Seek ways to leverage your relationships with the people you work with both inside and outside your company. Delegating tasks and sharing responsibilities can help you get more accomplished in less time.

Don’t get behind with your records. This avoids the time it would take to look up info or recreate details you need after the fact. Time block for this task.

Fire problem clients. If you have a customer that’s completely consuming your time and energy, let them go. Get to an appropriate cutoff point in your work, then politely ask them to finish the job with someone else.

Avoid office politics and gossip. These are big time wasters, in addition to being not very mentally healthy activities.

Keep refining your routine. Regularly review your recurring actions and determine where and how you could work more efficiently
